Sempervivum 'Black' (Hens & Chicks) is a succulent mat-forming perennial that produces gorgeous, evergreen rosettes of thick, meaty, bright green leaves with dark, burgundy tips. The entire rosette darkens to a gorgeous purplish-bronze for showy fall color as the weather cools. The mother rosette (Hen) distributes horizontal stems in all directions to create offsets (chicks). As the connecting stolon withers, each offset will establish its own roots and become independent of the parent plant. A strong flowering stalk emerges from the center of the hen rosette in June, bearing magnificent starry, white blooms. Sempervivums are monocarpic, meaning that they die after flowering. However, the offsets they generate typically compensate for the losses and fill the gaps left by the dead rosettes.
