There is some tolerance for complete shade, but foliage frequently grows best in the morning and afternoon sun. tolerates a variety of soil types, but likes ones that are rich, wet, and humusy. best when watered consistently. Established plants can withstand some drought. When grown in clusters, fruiting is at its best. Individual specimens may not fruit well. Plants should be grown in protected areas with organic winter mulches because they are not always winter hardy in the St. Louis region.
