Viburnum plicatum f. tomentosum 'Summer Snowflake' (Doublefile Viburnum) is a dense, multi-stemmed deciduous shrub with an erect habit that is unsurpassed when it comes to flowering. It is a multi-seasonal beauty. It is almost totally covered in flat-topped, lacecap-like clusters of snow-white flowers in late spring that measure 4 in. across (10 cm). When the flowers bloom, they appear fanned out on the horizontal branches, giving the plants a wedding cake appearance. Infrequent flowering persists through the summer and into the fall. A few brilliant red, egg-shaped fruits that eventually mature to black and serve as a summertime meal for birds replace the blossoms. In the fall, the heavily veined, dark green foliage turns crimson to purple red.
